CIS Tech Workshop 2/25/2014 Lightbeam: Illuminating Online Tracking http://cyberlaw.stanford.edu/events/cis-tech-workshop-lightbeam-illuminating-online-tracking Moderator: Aleecia McDonald - Stanford CIS Director of Privacy In this talk, Monica Chew and Garrett Robinson gave a brief overview of the tracking landscape and discussed tracking techniques and their attendant privacy concerns. They demonstrated Lightbeam, a Firefox add-on, and showed how it visualizes hidden relationships between the site you visit and tracking domains. They then discussed future improvements to Lightbeam and ways to preserve online privacy. Audience members were invited to bring their questions and their laptops! Monica Chew joined the security and privacy engineering team at Mozilla in 2012. Her interests include user sovereignty, tab sovereignty and contextual identity. She holds a PhD in computer science from the University of California at Berkeley and a Master of Music in piano performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She occasionally blogs about work at monica-at-mozilla.blogspot.com. Garrett Robinson joined the security and privacy engineering team at Mozilla in 2013. He is interested in protecting users from common attacks and enabling secure communication for everyone, to preserve the Web's unique character and incredible potential. He also works part time for the Freedom of the Press Foundation as the lead developer of SecureDrop, a tool to help journalists safely communicate with sources.
