Hastings, Neb. If you live in the city you most likely expect to find high-speed internet anywhere you go. But for those living in rural areas that might not be the case. Walk into a room and you'll most likely see someone on a smart phone, tablet or laptop. It's the internet connection to broadband or fiber, really giving these devices their power. University of Nebraska Special Projects Manager, Charlotte Narjes said, "With broadband you can work and live anywhere." That's why Rod Armstrong helps put together conferences to show Nebraskans how technology can improve almost anything including their businesses. Rod Armstrong said, "I grew up in Broken Bow, a small town in Nebraska, and it means a lot to me to try and give the message that it's possible to start and run a business to improve your profitability, even in very small communities, if you leverage technology well." Over the last two years grant money has provided $14 million to extend broadband in rural areas and the public service commission believes this will help farmers and ranchers make more money. Nebraska Public Service Commission Vice Chairman, Jerry Vap said, "They will be able to buy over the internet. They will be able to all kinds of e-commerce that they are not capable of doing right now." A state comission says nearly 400 Nebraska businesses reported an increase of jobs thanks to the internet. Fun gadgets like this oculus rift, allows you to step into another world so you can help build better schools, doctors offices, hospitals and it's technology like this that can reduce costs and make lives easier. Aim Events Director, Dave Coover said, "I can see uses for this in terms of medical response, firefighters entering buildings and making split second decisions." This is just the tip of the iceberg says Coover. The more software developed for different uses, the further the device can help. It's reasons like this Armstrong is dedicated to showing the younger generation, there is a future in Nebraska for tech and it's not going to be boring. Armstrong said, "It's also something that can be fun and engaging and it's not necessarily the perception that kids might have with what technology careers are all about." http://nbcneb.com http://khastv.com
