Результатом их мозгового штурма стала Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) о которой можно почитать здесь https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shuttle_Radar_Topography_Mission и здесь http://gis-lab.info/qa/srtm.html В результате этой миссии были получены данные высоты поверхности Земли, которые все желающие могли скачать бесплатно пройдя по ссылке http://dds.cr.usgs.gov/srtm/. Только вот незадача, после происшествия в Нью-Йорке в 2001 году, карты высокого разрешения стало возможным скачать только для США(близнецов не стало в США, но территорию США по-прежнему можно было скачивать - где логика?) Но с 2014 года благодаря USGS и сайту http://earthexplorer.usgs.gov/ стало возможным снова скачивать карты высот высокого разрешения 1 arc second ~30 метров между соседними замерами высоты. Только не забудьте зарегистрироваться и войти в аккаунт, чтобы скачивание карт стало доступным.
