Mid of people walking through airport LEAD IN: The official terror alert level in the United Kingdom is 'severe' , meaning that the intelligence services consider another an attack is "highly likely" and indicates a continuing high level of threat to the UK. As the summer holiday season approaches in the Northern Hemisphere increased security checks at airports are expected to cause long delays to travellers. But the latest security technology at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport promises to cut queues and protect passengers. . STORYLINE: Amsterdam's Schiphol airport handles about 160,000 passengers per day at peak times and is Europe's fourth-busiest hub. In an effort to reducing passenger waiting times in the terminal building and increase security the airport has introduced two new checks designed to speed up security and protect passengers. The airport is the first to regularly use new scanning technology to help find metals and explosives hidden under clothing. Ad Rutten is the Chief Operations Officer at the airport. He says the it is more pleasant for passengers who do not need to be frisked and they are not exposed to radiation. Timo Hannink a security officer explains how the system works. Passengers step into the cabin for three seconds and their body is scanned 360 degrees. Security staff can view an image of their body underneath their clothes and see anything hidden about their person.
